I found a story on a site and I just had to post it here. It's by an activist named Sidney Brinkley. She has some very powerful points and I don't want to push my opinions on you guys too much. I would like to know what you guys think. DO you think she has a valid point and the subordination of African-Americans even within the gay community will continue because there isn't any involvement on our part? Do you think that we are the ones that don't present ourselves? Is it just the way things are and in a couple of decades we'll catch up (don't criticize me for saying that, i'm just speaking as the devils advocate)

The state of the Black Union is rather perilous at the moment: HIV/ AIDS and other health issues. Social injustice. Entire neighborhoods under siege by drugs and violence. A public education system that is failing Black children at every level. Gaining the “Right to Marry” will change none of that.

The days of allowing “their” issues to suck up our oxygen, take our resources, sap our energy, dictate our focus and ultimately waste our time with their multi-million dollar fiascos, must end. I’m taking care “my” business and let the White Gay movement take care theirs.

"Jay, Cobey, Nat... Wow, it's great to see you guys!" Seeing them so
unexpectedly appear at the door to my classroom surprised and thrilled
me -- although, I have to admit, it suddenly also took my attention
away from the task at hand: managing the dismissal of my current
fourth grade class. Jay, Cobey, and Nat were students I had the
previous year, before they left the Lower School campus in uptown to
attend the Main Campus in midtown. Jay and Cobey were both
dark skinned, brown-eyed angels, athletic and slender. Jay was about
4'9" and Cobey maybe two inches shorter. Nat (formerly Nathaniel) was
their more portly friend, standing 4'8" with red hair and a round face
full of freckles.

"Heya, Mr. Kastan," they offered in response, more or less speaking in
unison. Immediately they let themselves in and began exploring the
classroom.

"Man, it's no fair. This is better than last year. You've got more
plants and books and new beanbag chairs," complained Cobey.

"Yeah, and that baseball clock. That's awesome!" added Jay.

Justin was walking back to his home in this less than desirable part of the
city. He had just turned eighteen years old a few days ago, August 15th to
be exact, but he really didn't have much to celebrate. He had just
finished high school, and he had hoped to be on to bigger and better
things, but so far the summer had brought nothing but disappointment.

He had saved what little money he had in order to send in many different
applications to different colleges around the state, but of those that
bothered to return to him, all had rejected his applications. It is true
that he was never very accomplished at school, but there was a good reason,
most of the time he had to work.

His future in this life seemed to become more real to him as he continued
walking along the cracked sidewalk. The houses he was passing became
smaller and dirtier, until finally he reached his destination, the Star
Crest trailer park. He had lived there as long as he could remember, just
him and his mother.
